Retreat Day #3

13 January 2013

Today's third day of retreat talks was just as engaging as the first two. Fr. Peter Phan is certainly full of ideas and makes one think about our Catholic Church beliefs and practices.

Helene O'Sullivan at morning prayer
At morning prayer, Helene O'Sullivan led a reflection on the new consciousness. A video was to accompany the prayer but we couldn't get the projector to work properly.
Small group reflection
As part of morning prayer, people met with those sitting beside them. Julia Shideler, Lindsay Doucette, and Joe Thaler met on the floor.
Fr. Peter Phan
Peter Phan gave his fifth and sixth talks today. He really challenges our ordinary understandings of the church and its mission--and offers new perspectives.
Conversation at break time
At the break time between the two lecture sessions, Becky Macugay, Nora Malawin, Lo Dam, and Len Montiel had a discussion in the breezeway.
Sports fans
At the back of the lecture room, a laptop was setup, connected to the house wifi, and during the breaks sports fan would go to check scores on games being played in American football on Saturday in the U.S.
Blessing at the liturgy
At the liturgy before lunch, the five new people being sent to Thailand and Cambodia were invited to come forward and offer a blessing for the rest of the group. Nancy Davies, going to Cambodia, was the first to bless the assembly.
The food serving table
The food is always good at the Salesian Retreat Center and there is never any hesitation about showing up for the delicious meals. On the left are Margo Cambier and Tom O'Brien, and on the right are Arlene Sale, Tom Dunleavy, Mary Litte, and Bob Wynne.
Afternoon discussion
Again this afternoon, Fr. Peter Phan met with anyone interested to talk about a variety of theological and ecclesiological topics from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
MKLM dinner in Hua Hin
A tradition among the Maryknoll Lay Missioners who come to Cambodia is to go out to dinner one night during the time we are here. This year the now nine Cambodian MKLMers had Margo Cambier, one of our New York leaders, and John O'Donoghue, from the Kenya region, with us for an enjoyable meal.
Gelato shop
A second part of that eating-out tradition is stopping on the way back for Italian gelato, in the same shop we have frequented for probably fifteen years. While so much of the rest of Hua Hin has changed and developed, the Gelato shop has remained in the same place. Here newcomer Ed Riehl enjoys the ice cream with Maria Montello who arrived in Cambodia last year at this time.
